Ah, the Jack Sparrow Tattoo. Who doesn't remember the wonderful mark of the great Captain? This tattoo is more than just ink in skin, aye. This tattoo symbolizes freedom and expression. Johnny Depp said: "My body is a journal." And that phrase is to be remembered. Although Jack Sparrow's tattoo doesn't have the lovely "Jack" in cursive underneath. Johnny Depp does. Depp claims that the "Jack" lettering was for his son Jack, and all of the images from the movies show that Jack Sparrow does not carry this lettering.

The meaning of the Sparrow tattoo derives from sailors of the 17th century. The sparrow was to show all onlookers that the bearer of said bird had undergone a series of great travels. The ocean underneath the sparrow means that Captain Jack had sailed all of the seven seas and had it sealed in ink.

The tattoo itself is mostly known to have the sparrow facing away from his body, though some scenes in At World's End showing it facing towards his body. One explanation for that is Johnny Depp's actual tattoo of the sparrow faces towards him, unlike Captain Jack's, despite being the same design. The tattoo has been guessed to be about 2x2 inches.
